Frequently Asked Questions

Notary service! People have several questions about these services in their mind. Notarization can be complex. Let us walk you through some of the most commonly asked questions at our office about notary service.

A Notary Public is an individual authorized by the government to witness and authenticate the signing of important documents. Their role is crucial in ensuring the legitimacy and validity of legal transactions by verifying the identity of signatories and confirming their willingness to sign. Notary services are essential for various reasons, including fulfilling legal requirements for documents like contracts, deeds, and powers of attorney. Notarization helps prevent fraud and adds an official stamp of approval to documents, making them more credible and trustworthy. Whether it’s for domestic or international purposes, utilizing notary services ensures that documents are legally recognized and accepted in official transactions and processes.

A Notary Public verifies signatures on documents and confirms their authenticity, ensuring legal transactions are valid. They don’t give legal advice but focus on authentication. Lawyers, on the other hand, offer legal guidance, represent clients, and handle various legal matters. While both work in the legal field, Notaries focus on document verification, whereas lawyers provide broader legal services. Modern-day Notaries do not get involved in litigation or argue cases before a judge. Their activities are restricted to non-contentious matters—those where the parties involved are in agreement.

The best way to find out what our fees will be for the notary service you need is to call us and tell us exactly what you need.

For example, if you need a document “notarized”, the fee will differ depending on whether:

  • You have already prepared and completed (but not signed) the form, and there is only one form
  • You may need us to draw the form for you
  • Besides that, there can be a need for legal advice on the form’s contents.
If you are buying or selling a home, you will need to be aware of things like:
  • Whether you are buying or selling, whether there is a mortgage involved (and with which bank), and whether everyone involved is in or out of town.
  • Disbursements, which could include Land Title Office fees, title search fees, strata documentation fees, government agency fees, courier fees, appraisal fees, title insurance fees, etc.
  • Taxes, including GST & PST
  • In all these tasks you need to get a good notary service and we are here to provide that.
A Will is a legal document that outlines your wishes regarding the distribution of your assets and the care of any dependents after your death. It allows you to name beneficiaries for your property, designate guardians for minor children, and specify other instructions, such as funeral arrangements. While it’s not always necessary, getting it notarized can add extra assurance and may make things easier later.
A Power of Attorney is a legal document that lets someone handle your financial and legal matters while you’re alive. It’s crucial to trust the person you choose because they’ll have the power to do anything with your money, like writing cheques or accessing your bank accounts. However, a Power of Attorney doesn’t cover personal care or healthcare decisions. You’ll need separate documents for those. It’s a common misunderstanding that your attorney can only act if you’re unable to. Unless your Power of Attorney says otherwise, it’s valid as soon as you sign it. Remember, it’s important to be of sound mind when creating legal documents like a Will or Power of Attorney, so it’s best not to wait until it’s too late.
